Established by a Hapsburg prince who in 1719 declared the village with its 600 homes a free port, Trieste became Europe's gateway to the sea combining 3 cultures: Italian, Slavic and Central European. The historic cafés like Antico Caffe' degli Specchi in the old city centre, which were the intellectual heart of the city, are examples of this important past. An often forgotten and a seemingly sleepy town, Trieste is on the contrary a very lively city. The train station is located roughly 6 km from the hotel. Friuli Venezia Giulia Airport is some 13 km away.
