This historic 15th-century coaching inn rose to national pre-eminence in the great age of coach travel, with as many as 100 coaches a day coming into the town. It was the official staging post for the famous Manchester Flier. Other travellers staying here and at the adjacent Bull tried to outdo each other in the telling of outrageous 'tales of the road', from whence the famous phrase 'a cock and bull story' derives. By car: from the north on the M1, exit at junction 15. Turn right at the roundabout onto the A508 to Milton Keynes. Continue on this road until reaching Roade. Take a right at the next roundabout and follow the A508 until reaching the Old Stratford roundabout. Take the second exit into Old Stratford through the traffic lights. Continue down this road into Stony Stratford. Turn right, signposted Town Centre, onto High Street. The hotel is on the left-hand side.
